Question about overnight camping for Half Dome Hike

Postby newhiker2013 » Thu Jun 13, 2013 5:20 am

My husband and I have reservations confirmed for September 2013 for trailhead - Happy Isles to Little Yosemite Valley - including Half Dome hike. We will be flying in to Fresno, CA and only want to bring the needed hiking gear...are there camping tents available for rent along the Happy Isles to Little Yosemite Valley trail? Any advise is needed since we are coming for our first time.

Do you have a wilderness permit obtained through the wilderness office ? Or do you have a day hiking permits ? If you do have a day hiking permit , you cannot spend the night on the trail .

There are no facilities along the trail. You can rent bacckpacking gear in Fresno at REI. Bear canisters can be rented at the park when you pick up an overnight wilderness permit.

I have the wilderness permit reservation from the wilderness office in Yosemite and it says we can stay 2 nights in a backpackers campsite in the park campgrounds one night before and one night after our trip. Where is the campsite they are referring to? Also, is there water along the way?

You have to carry your water or bring a filter and treat water from the river to refill. You'll need to be drinking a liter for every two hours of hiking, so I suggest a filter to obtain more before leaving the river for the last time at Little Yosemite.

The backpacker campground is near North Pines, the ranger will tell you where it is. You will be required to camp in Little Yosemite Valley in the designated area, or, to be 2 trail miles from Little Yosemite Valley before camping, while you are backpacking - this too is pretty clearly marked and the ranger can show you on the map.

Can you tell me what kind of gloves I should bring to climb Half Dome? Also, what is the temperature in September in this area for camping and for Half Dome?

Leather work gloves are best for the cables.

Temps can vary widely. I 'd expect it to be cool autumn weather. Keep track of approaching storms by reading weather forecasts in advance in September. From 30s to 70s
