I use Sweetwater drops (in addition to a filter). I think it tastes infinitely better then the old iodine tablets I used to use, even with the neutralizer tablets. They're also way lighter and less worrisome. I'll stick with them from now on.

When we stayed in LYV, we came across a couple using the SteriPen. It was interesting... They simply grabbed water out of the creek (no filter) and penned it. Idk if I'd be comfortable with the 'floaties', regardless of whether or not they're sterilized. The only problem they had was with the highly sensitive water sensor (to make sure they were sterilizing water and not, say, their hand). I agree with Bill-e-g, though... A fast running amount of clean and clear water is not always available, making a filter almost essential.

Anything's better than iodine

Postby BackpackerBC » Mon Aug 30, 2010 6:02 pm

Ugh! All I can say is that anything is better than nasty iodine!

Talk about ruining the feeling of being free out in the wilderness when all you can taste in your water is the medicinal societal reminder of the life you left behind.

Haha, can you tell I appreciate my time out on the trial?

I've used the steripen for two years now and think it's the greatest invention since sliced bread. It's super fast, light weight, and I haven't had one problem with it. As extremely cold temps can reduce the battery's effectiveness (the screen acts just like a cell phone that's gotten too cold), you just have to make sure it's not frozen. For me that simply means bringing it in my tent if it's going to freeze at night or putting it in an inside pocket in the morning for a while to warm it up before using it. Hardly difficult or problematic.

I gave the Steripen great a great review last summer after using it on one trip. On my August trip, however, I used up a fresh set of batteries on less than 20 liters. I realized then that batteries seem to vary wildly in the charge they carry. Has anyone tried the solar charger? I would think that with that along (or multiple batteries) you begin to lose the weight advantage over filters.

No..I never use this before.I am using the UV system to purify my water.I am also using the filteration process for treating the water. These Membrane & Filtration are employed in varied industries to get rid of free gas and objectionable style and odors from the water.

I've been using my First Need system for years without problems. Yes, it takes up some room and weighs about 1lb, but I can drink right away.

I'm locking this old topic as it seems to become a spam target.
