Only 2 days - Please Tip hiking in Yosemite

Postby cantabi » Thu Jan 13, 2011 10:46 am

I (47) and my wife (40) will go to Yosemite National Park in late April.
We have never been there and we will have two full days to do some hiking.
He knew that the Four Mile Trail are closed (or dangerous) this season.

Our physical condition only allows us to hike up to 8km (round trip) with 500m (1500 ft) elevation.

What suggestions for rides?

(Note: we live far away [Rio de Janeiro, Brazil] and we should not go back there anytime soon)

Thanks everyone!

I am not certain what you mean by "rides."

Most of the park will still be under snow in April. You will find that some of the Mist Trail will still be closed, as will Glacier Point Road, Tioga Pass, and many of the trails coming out of the valley will be very steep and icy. Given the short maximum distance and low elevation gain you require, you may want to check out the hike to Wapama Falls (the bridge there is washed out and will not be repaired until late spring, most likely), the Yosemite valley loop on the valley floor, the Wawona Meadow trail, and Mariposa Grove, which has a gain of about 800 ft into the upper grove. Mariposa Grove will be under snow still but if you stay on the roads the snow has been compacted by the many people who go in and it's walkable with good boots with traction.

For two days, I think Almosthere is on the money. One day should be spent in the Valley, seeing Yosemite Falls, Bridalveil Falls, wandering through the meadows of the Valley, hiking up to Mirror Lake, and taking the bus around through Happy Isles--exploring the visitors center. That would be a full day, if you got it all done.

And the second day, if we are still talking April and the weather is normal, I would drive to Wawona and/or Hetchhetchy. If you planned it right, you could start by entering the park through the South entrance, do Wawona, and then end up in the Valley and do some of those activities. And then the second do the rest of the stuff in the Valley, and exit through the North entrance, taking time to visit Hetchhetchy (that trail is more than 8Km, FYI)
