Lewis Creek Trail or Fletcher Creek Trail

Postby wilder1 » Wed Feb 02, 2011 4:45 pm

This summer I will be hiking the HSC loop. When I leave Merced to hike up to Vogelsang, which trail should I take: Lewis Creek or Fletcher Creek? What are the pros/cons? I know that one is slightly longer, but is one of them steeper than the other? Is one more scenic?

Lewis Creek

Unfortunately, I've yet to arrive at either Vogelsang or Merced Lake via Fletcher or Lewis Creek trails. That said, from what people have told me, Lewis Creek is the better route. I considered doing it last summer, but ran out of time. However, I got a good look down the Fletcher Creek route at Vogelsang last summer and it certainly seems as scenic and spectacular as any trail in Yosemite. Being one for high passes, I'd have to go the Lewis Creek route just to experience Vogelsang Pass though.

Having done both in both directions, I would choose Lewis Creek going UP to vogelsang. Yes, it is about two miles longer, but much more quiet. The initial climb out of Merced is said to be more difficult but I would disagree with that considering the climbs that seem to go on and on in the Fletcher creek route, Both even out in the middle and yes, the climb to the pass is quite the hike, it is worth the effort. Nothing like the top of the pass.
