Lyell Fork-Vogelsang loop

Postby amyziner » Thu Mar 10, 2011 9:45 pm

Hello,

We are thinking about hiking this loop in June from a Friday late morning through Sunday morning.

Anyone have any tips about this loop?
I am guessing we need permits, which one should we get?
Are there plenty of permits available or should we buy them now??
Is this a croweded loop?

Or anyone have any other suggestions?? We def need a loop bc we will only have one car..

Thanks in advance for any and all tips..

All of the reservable permits for Lyell Canyon are gone for June 24th, and I'm guessing it will still be somewhat slushy or muddy in the high country for much of June. If you feel lucky, you could try for some First Come First Served permits, but you'd need to be in line early. Permits: 24 Reservable, 16 FCFS per day

Look at the Yosemite NPS website about backpacking to see which trailheads have availability for the weekend. You might also consider "stick" hikes that go in & out on the same trail if you can't find a loop hike you like.

Lower elevation hikes may be drier, but I think you'll still encounter plenty of mosquitos where ever you hike.

Some good info. on this loop is in a couple other recent threads. See

It is a great trip though. It will definitely be wet in mid to late June so be prepared. Depending on March and April, you may still see some decent patches of snow too.
