Backcountry Permit Request Etiquette

Postby jpl1 » Thu Mar 17, 2011 2:45 pm

I have an an approved permit for mid June going out Tuolumne Meadows and exiting into the Yosemite Valley. The high level of snowpack and some of the posts here and elsehere have me a little worried and I am thinking about getting a back-up permit for something like Hetch-Hetchy or Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne. I'm wondering of it would be considered inappropriate to have two or more permits covering the same period of time and cancelling the ones I won't use last minute?

Thanks for all of the great posts here. I've been obsessing about this solo trip for a while and this site is a bit like my personal methadone.

Mid June? Yeah, you'll be lucky if the pass is open. It may be, since they do plow it, but no real indicator of trail conditions.

The trailheads that fill up are the ones from Tuolumne Meadows and from the valley - especially Happy Isles. I bet if you show up during the week you wouldn't have an issue with Hetch Hetchy.

Any difficulty you have with TM to the valley, you'll have it going down the GCT as well... same starting point, lower elevation drop, plus Pate will be muddy and swarming with skeeters.

Unless I am mistaken, Yosemite actually tracks the permits by person...so that you might have to request the second premit under a different name. I think their computer system would notice if the same person requested two permits for the same time/date.

At least, when I get my permit, they have a record of my previous permits on file and reference them.

When you go in to get the reserved permit - if the road is still closed they simply won't issue the permit. We had that happen to us when the controlled burn went out of control and closed the road - got to the office in the valley and they would not issue the permit at all. They instead offered us a variety of other trailheads.
