Sunrise Lakes Permit if Tioga Rd is Closed

Postby markwise » Sat Apr 30, 2011 11:18 pm

Back in January my buddies and I reserved permits for the Sunrise Lakes TH for June 7-9. Our intention was to hike Clouds Rest and then on to Half Dome. It certainly now looks like the Tioga Road will be closed still during our dates.

We were intending to camp near the CR/JMT junction between CR and HD.

Question is: would we be allowed to hike from Happy Isles up to our intended camping area at the CR/JMT trail junction even though we have a Sunrise Lakes permit? Even though we'd be starting from the "wrong" trailhead our first night's destination would be the same. Or do we need to wait in line for a Happy Isles>LYV permit?

Thanks for any help!

My experience is that you will be given the opportunity to hike to a "new location" but that doesn't mean that the quota system is out the window. If you want to hike through Happy Isles, you are going to need to get there early.

Or you can choose one of the other trailheads that isn't booked, and hike a different hike.

You will not have a permit - permits are specific to trailhead, so if you can't get to the trailhead, no hike. They will look at openings from other trailheads and allow you to have a free walk in permit the same as every other walk in, based on availability.
