Eagle Peak 5/7/2011

Postby marathonman » Thu May 05, 2011 12:42 pm

I'm heading up to Eagle Peak this weekend and since I've never been there, I just wanted to ask a couple of questions.

1) Are there enough trees there for some hammock hanging?

2) I hear there may be up to three feet of snow on top right now. I'm not too keen on hiking in my Sorels and bringing my snow shoes if I don't need them. Any thoughts?

Thanks!!!!

There's plenty of trees--too many in fact.

Snow shoes aren't useful. They work only for soft, fairly evenly distributed snow. In spring, the snow tends to be these big berms you climb up and over in the shade. The sunny parts of the trail tend to be snow-free and the shady parts tend to have thick berms you have to climb up and over.

That said, most of your climbing will be on the Yosemite Falls Trail, which is heavily exposed to the sun and should be mostly free of snow. You can always climb an alternative, such as Yosemite Point to the east if you find too much on the way to Eagle Point.
