2 day trip in June, advice please

Postby Fields » Tue May 10, 2011 11:49 am

HI everyone! I am so excited to have found this site. I am planning my first trip to Yosemite in the middle of June. The plan is for two of us to hike from Tamarack flat to the top of Yosemite Falls and then camp there that night. The following day we plan to hike down into the valley and then come out at the Mirrow Lake/Snow Creek trailhead(?). In any case, we are both in good shape and we hike hills in central California often. I have backpacking experience and since it is only one night I am not too concerned. If ANYONE has ANY information to share I would GREATLY appreciate it! I am looking for trail conditions, hike conditions, if this is a good distance, the affect the heavy snowfall will have on this area this year, advice about bears, etc. Thanks so much!

I've done this trip several times. You start from the old Tamarack Flat campground on Tioga Road and hike on rolling terrain, generally down. There's a creek crossing at the beginning, but that's it for crossings. There's a bridge over Yosemite Creek above the falls.

There's lots of camping at the top of the falls, to the west of Yosemite Creek. It's a popular area during the day (day hikers), and on weekends.

It makes more sense to hike down the Yosemite Falls Trail, I think. It's right there and you get to see Upper Yosemite Falls and the rarely seen middle cascades close up.

You could backtrack and then head down Snow Creek. You get a close-up view of the face of Half Dome hiking down the Snow Creek trail. Personally, I'd rather spend the extra time enjoying the top of the falls, but if you want more of a workount, head east along the north rim trail and down the Snow Creek trail. You end up at the north shore of Mirror Lake (Mirror Meadow).
