Good Maps??

Postby Fields » Tue May 10, 2011 1:32 pm

Anyone know the best place to get good trail maps? I have looked at several online places, but I cant get a good idea of their quality. I am hiking from Tamarack Campground -> El Capitan -> Yosemite Falls -> down to the valley and then out.

There's an older thread that links to some topographic map sites that are pretty good. You may want to do a search and see if you can find it.

I just purchased a National Geographic trail map at REI. May be able to get it on the NG website. It has pretty good detail.

I use the USGS topo maps. These are the best quality available printed by the US government. USGS makes scans of the maps available for free but you should have printed maps. There are commercial companies thar reproduce these is different forms but can't beat USGS for quality or price.

You can beat the USGS for price---since you can get the same maps, free, from ACME MAPPER on-line. And print them out to any scale you like.

NAtGEo maps are large scale, and have way too many colors---you can't read the contours half the time because of the clever shadings that they use to indicate various regions and limits. We take them along for the big picture---but for the daily trails maps, we print out small scale, clear maps from ACME...
