I need a backup hike for Panorama Trail...Any Suggestions??

Postby Snormal34 » Wed May 11, 2011 1:44 am

I'm visiting Yosemite for the first time the first week of June and I have been looking forward to hiking the Panorama Trail for months now........but it appears Glacier Point may be closed until later than then. Does anyone have any suggestions for a backup hike that would be similar in distance, difficulty, and still have some great views??

Thanks!

I have a similar question, while the Panorama trail is closed one way until Glacier point opens, is there a possibility to go up the Panorama trail and come down the 4 mile Trail say around this weekend (May 14,15). I would think there would be some snow along and I dont have much experience climbing/walking with snow. Is it still possible to do the trail this way or reverse? Or I should just wait till the Glacier point road opens?

The 4 mile trail is currently closed. The John Muir trail from Clark Point to Nevada Falls is closed - both due to ice & snow.

The park always makes a great effort to open the Glacier Point road for Memorial Weekend so I still have hope that it will be open the first week in June when I am planning to go on the Panarama Trail also.
You can check trail & road conditions at: http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/c ... UMP_124755
An option to the Panarama trail would be the Mist Trail to Vernal & Nevada Falls.

yosemite falls is about the same distance but will be harder since you need to climb, I would say snow creek would be a good one, nice views of half dome and much less crowded

Yosemite Falls and Snow Creek are both a ton of steep climbing and will be hot in the afternoon when sun is bouncing off the granite.

Going up Happy Isles, over Panorama and down the Four Mile from Glacier Point is a hard, long hike, of 14 miles (not including walking back to the Curry parking areas). We did it last year. We were all hiking in the high country every weekend for a couple of months before doing it, and it was still a leg burner. If there are trail closures (as there are currently) it will also be dangerous.

The hike from the wawona tunnel up to inspiration point is a good workout, and has good views - you run into snow at the top tho.

I'm not sure how the snow conditions will be on the Panorama Trail, but it looks like Glacier Point will be open for your visit:

The NPS website reports Glacier Point road will be open tomorrow.

The Panorama Trail is open. By that I mean there is pretty much no snow on it.
Very trivial amount. All that is left on that trail will be gone very very shortly.
And there is no snow if you are only going to Inspiration Pt. from Wawona Tunnel.

Pohono Trail on the s. rim is a different story...

Have fun
