Bear concern while hiking

Postby NBCN » Wed May 25, 2011 9:33 pm

Hi!

I'm really excited I'll be in Yosemite for 5 days in early June. I'm an outdoor sports lover from Barcelona, Spain, so this is already a dream come true.

I only have a concern regarding the great experience of being in Yosemite: bears. I might sound silly to you, but I'm kind of worried about seeing them, specially because I've never seen one! I'm going to do day hikes and was thinking about where to pack my food an where to keep the trash. Is it safe to eat by the trails? I just keep thinking of a bear approaching me while eating! I've read about what to do in case of seeing them while hiking, but I'd like to get some advise from you experts in the area. FYI I won't be camping, so it should be safer.

I'd appreciate any piece of advise you give me.

Thanks in advance!

Tranquilo.

The bears in Yosemite are very interested in finding food around a campsite when there are no people...but they don't both people on the trails. I hike in Yosemite all the time with a backpack full of food, and never give it a second thought.

I look forward to seeing a bear...because they are wonderful animals in their native habitat. And when I see one, I keep my distance....and so do the bears.

You will have a wonderful time in Yosemite, and if you are lucky you might just see a bear.

If you have a vehicle, you unload food items, ice chests, bags, or anything scented, and leave them in bear lockers near the parking lot. That keeps the car and the items safe til you finish your hike.

Bears in the national parks in California are benign. Keep a safe distance, and if the bear seems to be approaching, yell GO AWAY and stand tall, the bear will retreat.

the bears we have in Yosemite are called Black Bears. Black bears do not attack people. they only look for food that people left laying around in their tent or car. however, if you do see one, don't get too close so you don't bother it. you have nothing to worry about. i've encountered bears many times hiking by myself in yosemite.
