Anyone been to the North Rim Lately?

Postby KC » Wed Jun 15, 2011 7:14 pm

I am thinking of doing the North Rim the last weekend of June. Itinerary is not 100% planned, but if it's open, I'm thinking of going from Tamarack to Yosemite Falls or Snow Creek. May have to settle for a different trip though depending on snow/water levels. Anyone been up to the North Rim in the last few days? Have any ideas what to expect?

I was also planning on a backpack trip along the north rim (in at Rockslides, out at Mirror Lake) beginning on July 5th. Any recent information on snow coverage would be greatly appreciated. Even educated guesses would be helpful.

Thanks,
Rick M.

I posted some stuff here

in response, I believe, to the KC who started this thread. The info is a little old, by now there should be significantly less snow and marginally less water. The snow is very consolidated so that should be little problem. If you are decent at route-finding and comfortable hiking off-trail, you should be able to dodge most of the water.

My girlfriend and I hiked part of the North Rim starting on June 19, finishing the 21. We went up the Rockslides Trail and down Yosemite Falls.

There was still a lot of snow around the Ribbon Meadow area. It was consolidated, so we didn't posthole much. However, navigation was a little tricky because the red markers on the trees were spaced out quite a bit. We crossed Ribbon Creek a couple hundred yards upstream of the real crossing on a combination log/snowbridge. I am sure by now that is unusable. However, the creek didn't appear to be all that fast, I am sure a spot can be found to cross through safely. Eagle Peak Meadows was basically a swamp or walking on snow. Expect to get your feet wet and have them stay wet the whole day.

We decided to go down the Yosemite Falls trail instead of Snow Creek because we both were a little pressed on time to get back to work, and decided the inevitable walking on snow most of the day around the North Dome area would be too much. So we went down a day early and played tourist around the valley.
