Well I was planning a trip for early August and just was planning on doing some car camping...but as plans changed my friend is able to go now and am thinking of going backpacking for a few days. I am under in the impression that its too late to even try the Merced loop for a 5 day trip. Maybe I can do a overnight to Ten Lake from White Wolf? Is it possible to park at White Wolf leave the car there and backpack into Ten Lakes stay a night and hike back and stay a night at White Wolf? I wouldnt have a problem paying for a spot at White Wolf for the full duration even while I am at Ten Lake? The reason why I picked Ten Lake is that seems to be the only place with a permit available the time I want to go.
Thanks

Have a look at the wilderness permit page at the Yosemite website. it is still possible to get permits for any trailhead the day before or the day of your backpacking trip - understanding when they release the reserved but unclaimed permits, when they hand out walk in permits, and the rules on quotas and trailheads will help you a lot. If you start midweek you increase your chances quite a lot of being able to walk in and get what you want.
I'd overnight from the Ten Lakes trailhead instead of White Wolf. You can always stay the night before or the night after your permit in the backpacker campground at WW or TM, no problem.

I was considering that...but the problem with that is trying to get all the permits in one shot. I might not be able to get all of them in one day and I only have a certain amount of time off. I might just do the trip to Ten Lake...I kinda don't want to be around a large amount of people, but then again it will be early August. Although I will be up there mid week we will see what happens. Where are some of the areas that are higher up with great views?

All the permits?
How many trips are you wanting to take? One backpack trip = one permit.
I think you are confused about the wilderness permits. If you can be a little flexible and create a list of hikes you want to do, it's completely possible to get one permit for free by walking in and asking for the most wanted itinerary, then working your way down the list in order of preference until you find a trip that there is still an open permit for. They keep a quarter of the permits for walk ins. You can only reserve 75% of the permits - the rest are handed out the day before starting at 11 am. Free. To the first people in line. The numbers on the website are only the permits reserved. There are still walk in permits available.
If you want to get away from people you will have to go more than overnight - more like two or more nights. All the folks within a day's hike of the trail thin out even more the second day out. Still, just by backpacking you are leaving 99.9% of the people in Yosemite behind.

Oh I thought you need a permit for each of the locations you are going to stay at. I am already making my list and will have to play it by ear. My only bet is walk in permits! I am pretty flexible and will just grab what comes my way...thanks for the info.

Not conducive to solitude, as that is the most traveled part of the park - but will be very scenic indeed.

That is very true, the picture of Merced Lake in the book got me! Either way thank you for all the help...I just need to do it and have fun.
