Tuolumne Meadows to Valley Floor

Postby jjmelac » Sun Jun 26, 2011 12:56 pm

We would like to hike from TM to VF thru Sunrise Lakes, up to Cloud's Rest and down (not going up Half Dome), as a day hike. I calculate it as 24 miles mostly downhill except the Sunrise to Cloud's Rest part. Is this a do-able hike for fit hikers? Our hike date is September 18.

have you done a long hike like that before?
Do you have difficulty at higher elevations?
Do you know how fast you generally hike (1mph, 2 mph) to calculate how long you will be out there?
Do you have headlamps or flashlights and how do you feel about hiking in the dark?

If you can hike a consistent 2 mph it will take you 12 hours straight through. Depending on when you go you may have 12 hours of daylight (or not).

I know people who can do 30 mile dayhikes and get back before dark. I know a lot more people who can manage maybe 12 before their feet cry uncle.

"Mostly downhill" is probably numbers on a screen for you - does one of the numbers (feet of cumulative elevation gain) have any similarity to other hikes you done? You'll be going uphill between Clouds and TM, but not very steeply as compared to other trails.
