Need Route Help (Tenya Lake to VF via HD)

Postby VanLogan » Tue Jun 28, 2011 5:45 pm

I will be hiking the Forsyth Trail from Tenya lake and I need some information about where I should camp. I have a wilderness permit and I will have already spent some time near May Lake and Poly Dome Lakes in the prior days. I would like to camp semi close to water if possible.

I would like to know if there are any suitable spots between the Sunrise lakes intersection and the Clouds rest trail intersection of the forsyth trail. This is a 2.2 mile section that I have never been on before and the closer I am to clouds rest the better. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The next night I want to camp around the JMT and Clouds Rest Trail intersection. I will be using this as a base camp for a HD hike the next day. I am open to other suggestions on where to camp for a HD hike the following day but I am trying to stay away from Little Yosemite Valley.

Any Help would be appreciated...
Thanks

Eric

I did this same route (including a stay at May Lake the night before) two years ago. However, we didn't stop for the night before going over Cloud's Rest, so I can't speak to there being any good spots between the Sunrise and Cloud's Rest trail junctions. There is some water available between those two, but it is about halfway and it may be seasonal. We ended up starting at Tenaya and going this route up over Cloud's Rest and setting up camp at the junction of the Cloud's Rest trail and the JMT. There are lots of suitable camping spots, water (Sunrise Creek, I think) but also lots of people since it is only about 2.5 mi from Half Dome. Not as busy as Little Yosemite Valley, but you will have company. We started our hike back to Tenaya after climbing Half Dome by going up the JMT then the High Trail, camping at a small pond off the trail, and then hiking to the Sunrise Lakes area for a night via the trail that follows the Cathedral Fork, and finally hiking out from there. I'm jealous, Cloud's Rest is incredible, good luck.

The campsite at the CRT and JMT junction is one of my favorites. It's off the path of the HD trail (about 0.5 mi. east), in nice shade, not crowded, and has water. Don't camp too close to the creek--many mosquitos. There's a little breeze higher up to keep the 'skeeters away. Warning: bears like the site too.
