Ten Lakes Fishing

Postby Wolf » Tue Jul 19, 2011 10:37 pm

Hi, I'm planning on a trip to Ten Lake in Mid Aug. Just debating if I should bring my fishing rod with me. Any suggestion?
I'm a newbie for fishing. Can I get some advice on fishing in those lakes? Rod? Bait? or do I have to do fly fishing? Does spinner work? Thank you.

Check the fishing regulations in Yosemite area. Many waterways are artificial lures only, some are catch and release (merced river, part of the tuolumne).

The lower of the Ten Lakes has a lot of brook trout. I have better luck in most subalpine lakes in the backcountry with flies than with bait, but trout baits work okay. Some people like spinners.

Definitely follow the Yosemite and California state regulations!

When you come down the trail, the two lakes that are closest to you both have fish. The larger one to the left has many established campsites.

Some of the lakes are completely fishless.

While some of the lakes are totally barren, you'll almost certainly find some location with fish.

Make sure to get a license.

Also, it's required in yosemite to use barbless hooks. It's a good idea regardless. The smaller 4" fish will hit your spinners and you basically have to kill them to get them off a barbed hook as it fits into their whole mouth. :-(

Also, release the larger and smaller fish. Only keep intermediate fish and keep few. (and make sure to abide by the rules)

Best of luck.

Just got back from Ten Lakes. Had a great time fishing up there. Weather was nice. Not too cold at night. But the mosquito was killing me. Don't forget to bring some spray with you if you are going there soon.
