Cloud's Rest/Gaylor/Dana conditions in 1st week of Oct

Postby bwg999 » Wed Aug 17, 2011 8:57 am

I have spent quite a bit of time in Yosemite but usually Jun/Jul/Aug. I will be there 1st week in Oct and would like to hike Cloud's Rest, Gaylor Lakes, and possible Mt. Dana. I have hiked all 3 before, but not that late in season.

I realize weather can vary quite a bit from year to year, but was wondering if it is likely at all to encounter snow then? Are there other significant differences (besides temperature and daylight duration) in 1st week of Oct vs. mid summer? More likely chance of afternoon thundershowwers?

Thanks in advance.

Last year I backpacked over the first week of October and had snow, lightening, rain, sleet and hail over the entire four days, with periods of sunshine and clear skies. That wasn't in Yosemite but it was in the high Sierra and is consistent with what one should be prepared for in the Sierra in October.

All those places should be free of snow by then if there has been no recent snow storm.
