Is there an outfitter who will carry our packs (old guy)

Postby OldbutreadytoGo » Tue Aug 30, 2011 11:49 am

We just returned from two nights at Havasu Falls, Arizona where an outfitter carried our gear on mules over the ten miles to the falls. Is there an equivalent arrangement in Yosmite? I will be 59 years old next summer and our two children will be ten years old. It would be unrealistic for us (me) to carry our gear, but I would love two nights/three days hiking and camping in Yosmite. Thank you for any suggestions.

You could always call the park stables - not sure they do anything but the dude rides, but it's worth a try. You might have better luck with stables on the east side bringing you up through Ansel Adams wilderness into the park. There are also outfitters in Sierra National Forest who will happily load their horses/mules with your gear and haul it in for you. I've passed long mule trains before, followed by long strings of people with day packs.

This might help answer your question, at least for services available from DNC: http://www.yosemitepark.com/Activities_ ... Trips.aspx

I've seen the DNC Yosemite packers carry gear for people into the Yosemite Wilderness. Specifically, I saw them drop off food and gear at a campsite at the John Muir Trail and Clouds Rest Trail junction just north of Little Yosemite Valley. So contact them for details.

The DNC Yosemite website is at http://www.yosemitepark.com/

For Yosemite, Jay Barnes will run you a trip out of Hetch Hetchy:

If you want to go into the Emigrant Wilderness from Hwy 108, you can be packed out of Aspen Meadows:
http://www.aspenmeadowpackstation.com/
or Kennedy Meadows:
http://kennedymeadows.com/

I've never used Aspen Meadows but, I have used Jay at Mather and Matt at Kennedy for horsepacking trips and they are both good guys running a class organization.

You can ride horses or have your gear dropped off from Mammoth Lakes by the ML Pack Outfitters:

http://www.mammothpack.com/

I just finished a four day trip starting at Mono Pass TH>PargerPass>Koip Pass>Alger Lakes all over Ansel Adams Widerness and finishing off at Agnew Meadow. I ran into the outfitters all over that area.
