Gaylor Lake to Saddlebag/Lundy

Postby centurycyclist » Tue Aug 30, 2011 7:43 pm

While there is no trail from the top of Gaylor Lakes ,( the mine area) to Saddlebag, it APPEARS that it is reasonable to cross-country to that area. We want to get over to the far side of Saddlebag and take the trail to Lundy, where someone will pick us up. A day hike? Hard to tell how far it is. Yes, no, crazy? thoughts from experienced folks appreciated.

Seems like a reasonable route....but I would try to head as far West as possible (Maul Lake area) before descending. The slopes above Shell and Fantail Lakes look like a good place to get stuck going downhill...

If it were me, and I knew that I was going pretty much XC the whole way, I would plan on about six hours to do this hike...and I'm guessing it's about six-seven miles total?

then it is probably too far for one day since we will start at Tioga Rd. Always looks better on a map. You're right about the slopes by Shell and Fantail. By then, I'd probably have everyone yelling at me. Thanks for the info. BTW, I went to your website/blog and got some great info about backpacking. thanks!

It's closer to 12. Depending if you hike all the way to Lundy Lake.
Less than 4 would be xcountry. The route is pretty much Roper's SHR.
You can look for his book and find the route... but it goes past Spuller and Maul...
although I have heard of people dropping down to Fantail and then
hiking back up the outlet of Spuller ... If you plan it right or just get lucky...
you can also shave off 1 1/4 miles by taking the boat across Saddlebag.
Good luck
