recent conditions at Cloud's Rest

Postby bwg999 » Thu Sep 29, 2011 7:33 am

I will be day hiking Tenaya Lake/Sunrise to Cloud's Rest next week.

1. Does the Tenaya Lake outlet still require wading? In Aug it was about 18 inches deep, not sure if you still need to wade there or can cross on rocks.

2. Can I count on water along the trail? In Aug there was a small stream, not sure if all is dried up now. Plan to avoid the stale ponds.

Thanks!!

Next week when the storm front hits full force, snow level will be 6,000 feet and rain where there is no snow, so I suggest that you be prepared for several inches, take cables for the car, take warm clothes and the 10 essentials and be prepared for those conditions.

The crossing will probably be rock hopping but potentially higher depending on rainfall (20% chance of thunderstorms this weekend).

Sunrise Creek is a year round stream and there was still water flowing a couple weeks ago.

Thanks for the reminder about the weather. I had noticed the forecast and as I look closer our plans will change. Was going to hike CR on Tues, will probably go for Mon. Don't want to be anywhere near CR when the storm hits. After all, I go to CR for the incredible view, and if it is snowing there ain't no view.

Looks like about two feet, and they're pre-emptively closing Sonora Pass tomorrow.

Curious what Cloud's Rest will be like once this storm clears. It's supposed to be sunny, but what will the trail be like? I was thinking of camping at Sunrise Lakes this Friday and doing CR on Saturday.

Tioga Pass is closed. Snow shows on the Sentinel Dome webcam, around 7,000 feet or so.... Bet it will be snowy on the trail, and bet they don't open the pass for a while.

Bummer. I think I can handle the snow on the trail, but with Tioga road closed, it's a non issue. Where is the best place to get up-to-date information about weather related closures and conditions?

Yosemite's phone line - it's on the nps.gov/yose website, look on the Current Conditions page, the phone line is updated more often than the website.

Got back from my trip. I ended up going up Yosemite Falls trail. Once I got up there, I heard that Tioga Rd opened on Friday. Bummer.
