Back from a wonderful trip and wanted to provide a summary for anyone that might find it useful.
Overall weather was beautiful (chilly but tolerable at night, gorgeous days), mosquitoes were barely present, distance was reasonable.
Day 1 - From Happy Isles, hiked up Merced River to camp at Echo Creek junction, long day. Should have camped at Bunnell Point, looked like better site options.
Day 2 - Skipped Merced Lake and gave ourselves an easy half day to a Sunrise Creek camp. Did Half Dome* in the afternoon with minimal crowds.
Day 3 - Hiked to Sunrise Lakes and camped at lowest lake. Second and third lake had mosquitoes. Chilliest area of the trip.
Day 4 - Planned no-hike day at Sunrise lakes, great day hikes around Sunrise Mountain.
Day 5 - Hiked past Tenaya Lake and down into Snow Creek area. Camped at plateau looking at North Dome, beautiful site with lots of bold but harmless deer.
Day 6 - Hiked through North Dome and camped in valley above Yosemite Falls.
Day 7 - Hiked down Yosemite Falls trail, done by noon.
Half Dome incident* - This is
reported elsewhere, but around 5 PM on June 22nd a man slid about 30 feet outside the cables (apparently after instinctively reaching for a walkie-talkie dropped by another hiker). This was close to the bottom of the cables and other hikers were able to detach the western cable from the anchor and extend the slack to his position. He safely returned to the path with abrasions to this knees and back but otherwise did not require medical help. This operation left about 7 stanchons of the western cable out of their anchor holes with the cable itself completely off-path for the bottom 40 feet and then lying directly on the rock for the next 40 feet. Descent was still reasonable using the eastern cable (especially since there were only ~10 people on the cables at this point) but I don't know that anyone ascended after this.
