4 day backpacking hike in late May, suggestions?

Postby Bubblan » Mon Feb 13, 2012 7:49 pm

Hi,
I would appreciate any suggestions for good hikes that are possible late May. I realize that higher altitudes will still have snow, so advice for trails and campground that does not cross the coldest/inaccessible sites would be great.

We are in our early thirties and have moderate to high experience in backpacking, and in good physical condition, but never been to Yosemite. Just started looking at places to go, so general advice is appreciated.

Thanks,
Bo

Most of the park is above snowline, so that's a tough question in a normal snow year.

Hang out for a couple months and you'll have a better idea of what to expect in May - but it's been a really dry year, and there's maybe a couple feet of base above 7,000 feet, instead of the usual 6-10 feet. If we get a few more storms that might get deeper, probably not much. That'll probably melt off pretty quick. And then you will be asking in May, "where can we go where these bloodsucking #$%^ mosquitoes won't drain us dry?"

I suppose it could make up for lost time and really dump a bunch in March tho - but it sure looks like it's going to be a long dry season.

The normal recommendation is to go to Hetch Hetchy, which is one of our usual May easy destinations.
