Yosemite snow line and road conditions for mid April

Postby burtonator » Thu Mar 29, 2012 8:54 pm

I'm planning on starting the season early this year. I want to hit Yosemite in mid-april.

What are the roads like? I don't have a 4 wheel drive vehicle...

I was thinking of packing in snow shoes if the snow line is too low. Either that or buy cross country skis.

I've never camped on snow either but it doesn't seem too confusing :-P... but no fires which kind of sucks.

Also, will the lakes be frozen over? I want to get some fishing in...

Of course it depends on the weather...could get snow or temps in the 80s. All three roads into the western part of the park should be open most days without the need for chains. But from there on out, it's anybody's guess. It could be warm enough that the waterfalls start roaring and the trails are wet and spectacular. It could be cold, with frost and snow where the peaks and cliffs will be spectacular.

instead of trying to plan too much in the spring, I always leave my options open and take what Mother Nature gives to you: dayhikes in the valley if it's cold and icy, trips along the rim and into Little Yosemite Valley if it warms up, and maybe even an adventurous hike into the high country if everything melts quickly.

We have suggestions for all of those on our website

Or just read a good mystery novel set in the Sierra; https://www.amazon.com/Danger-Falling-Rocks-Paul-Wagner/dp/0984884963
