My family is visiting Yosemite in early July. We have a wilderness permit for 5 nights, entering at TM to Vogelsang and exiting at Happy Isles. Here's my plan - is it a good one? is it feasible? could it be improved? is it safe to count on finding a campsite along Sunrise Creek where the CRT and JMT intersect? (I've read here that sites exist.) Day 1 - hike to Vogelsang/camp at Booth Lake. Day 2 - hike Fletcher Creek Trail to Merced Lake/camp at Merced Lake. Day 3 - Hike High Trail to JMT/camp at Sunrise Creek. Day 4 - hike Clouds Rest loop (11 miles - w/o packs)/camp at Sunrise Creek. Day 5 - hike Sunrise Lake loop (11.6 miles - w/o packs)/camp at Sunrise Creek. Day 6 - hike to Happy Isles.
My strong teenaged sons (age 18 and 19) would like to climb some peaks - which ones are worth doing in the region and are there trails to these? Fletcher, Vogelsang, Rafferty? Which trail to Merced is more scenic - Fletcher or Lewis Creek? Which is the best direction to hike CR loop? Is the loop to Sunrise Lakes worth the trip - either via JMT and along Cathedral Fork trail (14.6 miles) or JMT and trail from Tenaya Lake (11.6 miles)? We are a reasonably fit family of 3 teens and parents in their 50's who are experienced backpackers. Thanks so much.
