Entering YNP from other areas

Postby mikecain3 » Fri Jun 15, 2012 4:07 pm

If you are hiking outside of the park on a wilderness permit for Ansel Adams and you want to cross over the park boundary into chain lakes, how does the permit work? Do we need to drive into the park and get a permit for Chain lakes or Breeze and the back out of the park again? The trailhead is from the Chiquito campground.

Are those good destinations?

When hiking into Yosemite from an outside area, you only need a permit from that area, though all Yosemite rules (such as no dogs) apply within the park. Also, it is free coming into Yosemite that way.

The trailhead for that hike is not the campsite, but to the northwest of it and closer to the pass, can't remember the name off hand, saves you from some unneccessary uphill hiking. It is a good entry point, but I don't recommend Chiquito Lake as a campsite unless of neccessity due to a late start.
