wilderness permits/bc camping

Postby nyscarrot » Mon Jun 25, 2012 12:01 pm

Can one pick up their reserved wilderness permit at either wilderness office - in the Valley or in TM? And it seems there's a bc camping area both in the valley and at TM - is that right and can we count on this the night before and after our permit dates - that is, they won't turn us away because of space?
Thanks.

yes, that is right. The permits are on a computer system, and they can pull them up at either office.

And they may check your permit at the BC campground, but there will be space. They are not my favorite place to stay, crowded etc., but you can always find a spot for a tent.

I was wondering if one person can hold two wilderness permits for two different trailheads for the same dates? For instance, if I get a permit for one trailhead but then change my mind and the next day get a permit for a different trailhead while my first permit still hasn't expired?

permits are only really considered as a head count for a particular trailhead on the entry date, beyond that it is just a rough itinerary of where you will be in case you dissappear and someone comes looking for you. so yes, you probably could get a permit again the next day.

I am not sure, but my guess is that the computer system would flag this and prevent you from getting two permits. I do know that when I get mine, they let me know that they have a track record of my previous trips...

I don't think you can go in on day 1 and get two permits. By that I mean I don't think you
can say I want a Ten Lakes Permit for today... come out tomorrow... and also give me
a Cathedral Lakes permit for tomorrow start right now.
What you are asking is... "I got my permit for tomorrow start... I stay tonight in BP CG..
over the night I change my mind... and want to go back into permit office and
get a permit for today for a different trailhead. can I do that?"
I don't know the answer. But I hope the answer is no. It's not in the spirit of how things
are set up. By that I mean... let's say you hang around until late.. and then get a
permit someone had reserved that became available... and now they release
your original permit to the pool. Someone coming in that day may have gotten
denied already b/c of what you did.
Maybe I just confused you... and wasted my time... and yours.
Just ask when you get your permit.
