Ten Lakes and Cloud's Rest (separate questions)

Postby bwg999 » Thu Jun 28, 2012 4:03 pm

I have done a bit of day hiking in Yosemite and have enjoyed great views from several peaks generally in the middle of the day. I am now favoring overnighters so I catch a sunset/sunrise at more scenic locations than Tioga Road. Would welcome any input on the following:

Ten Lakes and Grant Lakes: have not been here yet, but the reviews I’ve read make it sound great. I have a permit for a 2 nighter next week. Plan is…
• Day 1: pick up permit, hike in and camp at Ten Lakes
• Day 2: explore Ten Lakes and Grant Lakes (I am more photographer than fisherman)
• Day 3: hike out in the morning, with an afternoon short hike planned or maybe sunset on Lembert Dome
My question is about Day 2: will I get bored and wish I hiked out and had the extra day for other adventures or is there enough in the area to explore for a full day? Basically, is one sunset/sunrise enough out there or would two really be better? I realize personal preference comes into play, just wondering what others recommend. Also, besides the lakes and the lookout just after the fork for Grant Lakes, are there other “can’t miss” locations for great views?

Cloud’s Rest: I have enjoyed the incredible view from CR summit about 4 or 5 times, always in the middle of the day hiking up from Tenaya Lake. Are there reasonable locations to camp close enough that one could hike in and set up camp in the afternoon, enjoy sunset on CR summit, hike back to camp (20-30 min max), get up and enjoy sunrise on CR summit, then hike out for a noon burger at TM Grill. Any reasonable campsites fairly near CR?

Thanks in advance!!

Forgot to ask: what is water availability (next week) between Ten Lakes trailhead and Ten Lakes? Map shows a couple streams...thanks

There is plenty to explore in Ten Lakes. You'll want to explore Grant Lakes on the way in...the ridge separating Grant Lakes from Ten Lakes is not trivial. Water availability should not be a problem at this time of year. Regarding views, there are lots of those, but I really liked this spot (great view of the GCT):

p.s. See my warning about mosquitoes...my guess is that Ten Lakes is hitting prime mosquito time as well.
