DAY-HIKE Advice please. NorthDomevs.CloudsRest

Postby jps847 » Mon Jul 02, 2012 2:32 pm

YES! Thanks for the replies! just to clarify I do have the condition of being in peak physical shape and am quite very familiar with how long these extreme day-hikes should be:) definatly will be prepared with plenty of water and food for the hike, no way jose i will turn out to be a statistic.

Also, Thank you for the correction, yes "Snow Creek Falls Trail" is where I would like to head down from North Dome back into the valley. what are Your thought of going up through yosemite falls>Hike towards North Dome> pass by Indian Rock> down Snow Creek Falls trail. What would be any of your thoughts and concerns of this as a day-hike for time wise leaving before sunrise?

As for Clouds Rest, I know it is possible to complete as a day-hike by setting out early from the valley floor. My question was if it would be easier and feasible from taking the 8:30am tour bus from the valley to glacier point>hike panorama trail>to clouds rest.? I just wasnt sure on the difference of mileage and hiking time would be best. As of now my first option is hiking early through Mist trail>Clouds Rest> say Hi to Half-Dome from the saddle> head back towards the valley. just as completed in this journal http://www.pbase.com/cloudsrester/cloudsrest_half_dome_in_one_day

And I would also like to ask if you had to choose, which route would you do and why? and if you have done these both, which scenery from the hike and destinations would you reccommend to me?

Those are VERY long routes you are suggesting, with some significant elevation gains as well. Most people would take two or three days to cover that territory.

There is a long list of recommended day hikes on our website in the Yosemite section of destinations...and it includes some of these same routes, but done as a series of one day hikes

Or just read a good mystery novel set in the Sierra; https://www.amazon.com/Danger-Falling-Rocks-Paul-Wagner/dp/0984884963

That's a weird route.

There's no shuttle to glacier point - there's a tour bus. Not even sure why you would want to do that all in one day. You are either a super hiker with more stamina than any normal man, or not really looking at the map.

My second Hike was looking into Hiking up Yosemite Falls, going to North dome, then hiking down tenaya canyon through mirror lake back towards the valley? Thank You

Again, not sure you understand what's entailed here. Hiking down Tenaya Canyon isn't recommended - it's not safe, experienced canyoneers hesitate to go there because the terrain is extremely rough off trail climbing, *not* hiking. Unless you mean the Snow Creek trail, which does not go into Tenaya Canyon at all.

Unless you have routinely done 20-30 mile day hikes with 5000+ feet of elevation gain, pick one - Clouds Rest, Upper Yosemite Falls, North Dome, OR Half Dome. Clouds Rest from Tenaya Lake is 14 miles round trip - from the valley floor it is 22 miles without all the other stuff. From Glacier Point, it's more like 35 miles.

I have done all of those hikes, but never in one day. And I wouldn't try, either. I am in excellent shape, but I like to stop and look at the scenery from time to time, and I like to keep my mind more or less fresh as I hike.

For scenery, Yosemite Falls and North Dome cannot compare to Clouds Rest and Half Dome.

I don't know that you are very familiar with that kind of hiking at all - if your normal epic hiking is done at lower elevations, with fewer steep climbs, you might be in for an "epic" surprise.

I wouldn't do any of it the way you are describing. Unless I decided to do it as a backpacking trip, and since it's the most heavily used section of the park, I probably wouldn't do that either.

Hmmm,,,,, I have done this this exact route, twice. It can be done in a day hike but you need to hustle and make sure you bring a headlamp and be prepared to do a minor overnight stay, as it will be getting dark on your return, even starting at dawn. Having said that your overall pace will determine how well you do. After Yosemite Point, you get into a sceneless, forested area, which we jogged at a 10 minute/mile pace. As you progress towards North Dome you hit a very wide open area/trail junction. You can head right out to North Dome, or keep going towards Snow Creek. Again based on your pace going right is worth it.
What I mean by a minor overnight stay is to be prepared for heading down the Snow Creek Trail in the dark. Once you are on it there is no place to to stop and psuedo camp, you are basically coming down a cliff. I believe it took us 10 hours to complete the trip and we were going at 3-4 mph.

If you can swing it and get up to the either Glacier Point or the Sunrise trailhead, you save yourself 3500+ feet of elevation gain. You can do Clouds Rest as a day hike from those two points. I did it 5 times from Toulumne Meadows and it took us roughly 10 hours.
Hope this helps

I should also point out that the trail to North Dome is a side trip on this route---and it's the one with by far the best views. It will add to your mileage and time...and should NOT, under any circumstances, be taken at a jog. There are parts that are very steep and have some impressive exposure. I'd also suggest visiting Indian Rock/Arch, because it is very cool, and because the ridge to the east has great views of the Clark Range
