Family Hike 2A and 2 C (9 and 10 year old boys)

Postby Skialta » Fri Aug 03, 2012 12:12 pm

4 days of blissful Yosemite this August.
Need help with sugestions on day Climbing/ hikes/fishing/biking and or horseback riding. Southern Yosemite Mountain Guides (SYMG) are booked for climbing.
We are a very athletic family so, long hikes is ok.

Rafting is dry and out for the season but, is there any swiming?

thanks

Too late for rafting (and a dry year). Time varies--June for dry years, July for wet years. Call the bike shop at Curry Village next year to check conditions. Can also rent bikes at the bike shop! There's a big loop trail around upper Yosemite Valley.

Swimming in the Merced--most popular is around Stoneman Bridge (north of Curry Village) and downstream. Look for wide parts of the river, where it's safer.

Also swimming in all the hotel pools.

Horseback riding at the stables in Yosemite Valley (near North Pines campground).

Fishing on the Merced--catch and release. Have to ask others about that (previously posted)

Worth a day spent in Tuolomne Meadows by the Tuolomne River - hiking, picnicing, tossing rocks, etc.. Boy Heaven. We spent one magical day in August with our then 8 year old hiking part way to Glen Aulin. We never got there because the river invited us to enjoy (in the spots where it was safe of course). This is still one of the best travel memories we have.

Our son loved hiking upper yosemite falls (age 10)- but that was June on a high water year. He liked the water, but loved the challenge of the hike and "getting to the top". Again -- a boy thing. Would be very hot and you would want to do this in the early am, I would think.

We also loved hiking to Sentinal Dome (really a walk - but a great view of the park and a great spot for lunch allowing the kids to scale and get to the top of a cool dome).

Enjoy! Leslie

I'd also vote for a day hiking to Gaylor Lakes. There's a trail to them out of Tioga Pass. From there you can go off trail and explore Granite Lakes (both sets of lakes have trout) and even go higher and check out an old mine. All at about 10,000 feet or higher. A great adventure for those boys.

And you might also consider climbing Mt, Dana....
