LizLake to Nelson - Cath Range backdoor

Postby Y'semiteseen » Mon Aug 06, 2012 9:37 pm

Anyone done this route this year? Various posts from those considering it - arodin, how'd it go?; jaeyosemite, any new advice? - but anyone been up that way? I know it's not a tough route, for XC, done it twice, but last was 15 years ago (uh oh, typed myself as graybeard...) and I've heard there was a lot of windfall this winter from a northerly (unusual direction) storm. Also, been a dry year, but could be a good thing, mid-season (next week). Any news?

All right, all right - rest of the plan: up past Reymann to Rafferty saddle (go for it, jaeyosemite) down to Boothe, up Vogelsang Pass to Bernice, then back out, maybe via Evelyn/Ireland. Any thoughts?

Hayduke lives!

We did much of this route last year, and it was a piece of cake. One advantage to XC is that you don't have to try and find/follow the trail through fallen timber. You just pick a route that gets you to where you want to go.

Frnakly, I don't remember such heavy timber on this route, so any windfall damage would have a small impact on the trip anyway. The worst of that damage was far south of here, near Reds Meadow. But we just got back from five days near Thousand Island Lake and saw a total of about ten trees down on that hike...

Went in and out the side doors...

There was little to no deadfall that I recall.

Deadfall in Sequoia

Saw some deadfall two weeks ago backpacking. It was in Kings Canyon National Park, specifically between Kearsarge Lakes and Bullfrog Lake. Not a lot, but the trees that died must have been hundreds of years old.

There's deadfall throughout The Sierra. But there was little in this area to my recollection.
Lots of people complained about the area by Washburn Lake.
Areas that I have been to that had a lot were Slide Canyon and Virginia Canyon...
although crews had been in Virginia and cut everything ... Slide hadn't been done yet.
Mostly we stay off the trail... so we just walk around all this ...
