Oct 16-21st Solo Hiking

Postby jtaylor » Sun Oct 14, 2012 1:47 am

So i've never been to Yosemite, but admired it through numerous climbing videos.. I would be coming all the way from Oregon hoping to scope out some of the beauty and just hike alone for a day or two or three... Although it does seem that this is potentially a chancy time to drive so far for a hike that might not even be accessible?

I am going to call tomorrow, but I was hoping to see if anyone has anything bad to say about hiking

clouds rest hike, the pohono trail or the panorama trail at this point in the season? specifically alone and anytime from the 16th to the 21st in october 2012?

All of those hikes are easily done alone, and much depends on weather. If you have snow early, they may close the pass down and you won't make it to Tenaya Lake. Also, it may close the Glacier Point road and you won't make either of the other hikes. However, weather looks real good here for the next week so I'd go. My preference would be the Panorama Trail and try to plan on getting a ride back to Glacier Point via the bus system or finding a ride. Or, you can get a late start and take the bus from the valley to Glacier Point (provided it's still running) and hike back to your car. Plan about 5 hours to hike comfortably for that.

Clouds Rest will be a r/t so plan accordingly and get an early start. You'll use most of your day for that.

Good luck and have fun. I've done both solo and it shouldn't be a problem.

thank you so much for the quick reply! :) I was told by a local its supposed to be awesome weather this week, but i don't wanna put all my eggs in one basket! and i did hear how the roads get shut down so thats a bit scary of a thought, but if the weather should be good enough i'm down to take a little gamble and make the drive

so hopefuly i can manage to get there tuesday night. Sleep in my car (where?), hike wednesday morning, possibly setup camp out in the woods, hike back to my car... drive to another trail, hike, sleep in the car at night, then possibly a day of exploring and not as intense hiking... i've been calling all morning but kinda lost the last number i was given after calling a few people then getting transfered over, lol..

Weatherwise you should be fine, looks like perfect weather - http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?CityName=Yosemite+National+Park&state=CA&site=HNX&textField1=37.7985&textField2=-119.514
All of the high country campgrounds are closed, so your choice is one of the campgrounds in the Valley, or along Lee Vining Canyon Road.
All of the hikes you mentioned have been done by many of us solo, it's not a big deal. Just be very, very prepared for emergency situations, as the sun is going down pretty early.
On any day hike, I bring along a medical kit, band aids, aspirin, mole skin, duct tape, etc. A headlamp(absolutely a must) matches, the infamous orange shovel, TP and zip locs to pack out the TP, layered clothing. I can't even begin to count the number of day hikers I have pulled out because they were not prepared.

Hopefully the car will be in a campsite in the valley, or you might get ejected from the park.

They don't let people do the pullout camping thing.
