Less popular trails

Postby Reno Frank » Mon Feb 18, 2013 10:04 pm

I am arriving at Yosemite May 28, 13. I hiked Half Dome last September. I'm searching for some little known hikes mainly around the valley or towards Glacier Point. Several months ago I found a couple online: a little used route up the Four Mile Trail and another little used trail near Happy Isles that leaves the regular trail near the Vernal Falls Bridge. However I can't locate that information now. Can anyone recommend some unknown, little known, less traveled trails?

(a little used route up the Four Mile Trail and another little used trail near Happy Isles that leaves the regular trail near the Vernal Falls Bridge) I think you're referring to the Clark Point Trail which takes off from the John Muir Trail after reaching Clark Point and then travels to Vernal Fall. Not my favorite because you'd be better off on the Mist (takes you to Vernal) or stay on the JM to reach Nevada Fall (by pass Vernal). Either way, you run into a lot of hikers, less so on the JM from Vernal to Nevada Fall.

My all time day hike is the Panorama Trail starting at Glacier Pt. Early start (7am)=no hikers all the way to Nevada Fall. Peaceful and beautiful views. Saw my first male Sooty Grouse after years of hiking and backpacking the Sierra's. I've always heard them but never spotted one. Both male and female w/chicks on the trail.

Not sure what trails you are referring to, but if one of them is the Ledge Trail - don't do it. It's extremely dangerous.

I can't think of any trail other than the stock trail that leaves the Happy Isles/Mist trail near the bridge. Unless you mean the remnants of the old road that never became a usable road. They won't get you far - there's a lot of rockfall in that area.
