First timer camping in the valley. Winter options?

Postby Bmats » Sun Mar 17, 2013 6:14 pm

I'm heading up to Yosemite valley for my first time ever on March 24th. Planning on camping in Upper Pines campground for around 2-4 nights. I'm in moderate to good physical condition and am a technical climber as well as a hiker. My current plans are to hike Vernal Falls and Yosemite Falls as well as try snowshoeing for my first time out to Dewey Point. I'm going to bring my backpacking gear and would love to get some camping in outside of the campgrounds. I've heard that Dewey Point can be a good place to camp (200 ft. away from the Point itself) and I'm all but positive I'm going to give it a shot. Are there any other short backpacking trips worth mentioning that I can do during the winter season? Any other activities in general? Renting a bike within the valley and ice skating is all I'm sure of.

That's a great start. You can also hike up Yosemite Falls or SNow Creek Falls trails to camp up there---but Dewey Point has a better view, IMO.

WE've also got a list of hikes on our website that you can take in the Valley to get away from almost everybody--you might check those out for fun.

Or just read a good mystery novel set in the Sierra; https://www.amazon.com/Danger-Falling-Rocks-Paul-Wagner/dp/0984884963
