Ireland Creek

Postby atomicmonkey » Tue Mar 19, 2013 8:32 pm

Hi,
At the end of July I am heading out of TM to YV via Lyell Canyon. I am planning on a super easy first day to acclimatize to the elevation (my bed at home is about 2 1/2 inches above sea level on a sailboat in LA). I am planning on camping near the intersection of Ireland Creek and the Tuolumne River. If I decide to go further, does anyone know where the next suitable place to camp might be? It looks like there is a wooded area just before the un named lake east of Lake Evelyn. Does that make sense?
Thanks!
Mike

Your first criteria for an acceptable campsite should be that it is 4 miles from the trailhead. The turnoff to Ireland doesn't meet that criteria, so even though there are clearly used campsites, they are illegal, both for being too close to the trailhead and because they are too close to the trail and the water, from what I recall.

You'll have to be almost to Kuna Creek to camp legally in Lyell Canyon. There's plenty of places. Going to Eveylen or Ireland would also satisfy the requirement.

OK, thanks! One of my guidebooks talks about great camp spots just after the turn up to Vogelsang. Not all guidebooks are created equal! So the next closest decent place to camp looks like it might be just after the Ireland Trail intersection. The farther I go, the easier the next day will be (Lewis Creek and Florence Creek). But I am trying to make the first day an easy one and there is the climb out of Lyell Canyon. Thanks for your points! It will probably be a 'find it when I see it" kind of deal!
