June 14 Weekend

Postby atomicmonkey » Tue Apr 16, 2013 5:59 pm

I am in need of a good suggestion.
I have a three day weekend in June. I am dying to go hike somewhere. I would love to go to the Tuolumne Meadows area like McGee Lake or even Cathedral Lakes. But I am sure there will be too much snow on the ground even if the road is open. I am looking for something that is 5-7 miles out on Friday, hang out and enjoy life on Saturday and hike back on Sunday. It's too late for the Valley, I think. Does anyone have any suggestions for a beautiful quick weekend?

it might not even have to be Yosemite.

Thanks!!
Mike

I think there will not be snow on the ground in June... there's hardly any (comparatively speaking) right now.

I would go to Lake Thomas Edison, hike out to base came along the creek, explore the recesses and fish, and return to the car. That's not in Yosemite, but it would for sure be open and snowless.

AT: Are you sure that Kaiser Pass will be open?

I flew over the Sierra today, and any lake above about 8500 feet is still frozen solid...

April 27 is the reported opening date for the pass. I'm going backpacking to Walling Lake that weekend.

Excellent.

I was on the right side of the plane as we flew over Yosemite...and I am guessing that the snow levels are less impressive further south. I know this is a light snow year, but there is still plenty of snow in the Emigrant Wilderness...

Please post a TR when you get back!

According to http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/tioga.htm plowing begins May 15, 2013. But maybe the April 27 refers to the east half of 120 being plowed to the park entrance gate?

It refers to Kaiser Pass, not yosemite.

Great idea on the Lake Thomas Edison area. I have never been over Kaiser Pass. I have raced allot of sailboats on Huntington Lake, just before Kaiser Pass.
I also sent in for a permit at Yosemite. Hike one was for Cathedral Lakes and hike two was for a Glen Aulin pass through. My third choice I left open and asked them to pick, they gave me a permit to Ten Lakes. Great idea, just thinking it might be too early in the season for 9,500' and crossing streams. The good news is that I have a couple of great options!! Now I am just counting days!!
