Early June Clouds Rest

Postby Flyingfitz » Tue May 07, 2013 9:28 am

Need some advice. I did several hikes from the valley with my son last year. We want to try hiking Clouds Rest this year. I have a block of time off the first week of June when we could make it happen. I have several concerns and need advice. This will be a one day event from Tanaya Lake yo clouds rest and back.

Snow at altitude. How much this year? How will this effect the trail and the markings?

Water crossing below Tanaya Lake. How deep and how difficult? Ideas?

Other hikers. How many can I expect to see the first week of June 2013? We are recreational hikers. I dint want to get in over my head with a 13 year old with no one around for hours.

General advice. I know this hike is very doable by amatuers later in the year. I have read the forums and watched the youtube videos. I know the hike is dependent on local seasonal conditions. Can anyone tell me what I am getting into this year?

Thanks in advance.

I don't think you'll have a problem with snow this year . Right now there's hardly any snow to speak of . The trip from tenaya lake is 14 miles round trip and that there is a significant amount of elevation gain on this trail . I would rate this is a moderately strenuous hike and very strenuous for people who don't hike a lot At higher elevation . This is a popular hike, so there are usually lots of people on the trail . Though not as many as there would be if you were going to half dome . The crossing at the outlet of the lake should not be any problem just a wade.

I would just say that if you WANT to see more people, go on a weekend day, rather than a weekday.

But this is a popular hike. You won't be alone.

And it is stunning

Does anyone have an estimate of the temperature and snow cover on the clouds rest trail for next week? Also, how deep is the water below the lake?

Could someone please confirm that a permit is not required for the tanaya lake to clouds rest day hike?

The only day hikes that require permits are Half Dome and Whitney.

Temps are going to be fine, snow cover - if any is left - will be patchy and shallow.

Total success today! The lake crossing is knee deep. Very few patches of snow. The trail is basically unobstructed. 4 1/2 hours up. 3 1/2 hours down. Bring 3 to 4 liters if water, Sunscreen and lots of high octane bug repellant. Great memories!

Yes terrible. Had to keep moving. Used the 40 percent deet and still got swarmed. The worst was the parking lot and the creek.
