May Lake Trailhead

Postby Chlo83 » Sun May 12, 2013 8:18 am

Hi,

We are planning a family hike up to May Lake High Sierra Camp - it will be our 7 year old's first overnight hiking trip. We are hoping to be able to go onto Glen Aulin the next day but depends if availability opens up.

I was wondering a couple of things - are there bear boxes at the May Lake trailhead? And if so would it be ok to leave the car there overnight if we made sure any food/toiletries we weren't taking up to the HSC were placed there.

Secondly - between what times does the Tuolumne Meadows shuttle run? The park website says that it runs every 30 mins but am not sure when it starts and finishes. If we manage to get the extra night at Glen Aulin we will probably park at TM and leave the car there - are there bear boxes for people not staying at the lodge?

Thanks so much - we are coming from Australia but I grew up in California and have so many happy Yosemite memories - but as a kid I wasn't responsible for planning bear boxes and cars!

All trailhead parking areas have bear boxes. It's OK to leave the car, but leave food in the bear box. Remove anything that looks like food or food contains, and trash.

At Tuolumne Meadows there are several bear boxes behind the TM store area, besides the trailheads.

The TM shuttle only runs in summer. Opening dates vary. Here's information, including stops, schedule and start/finish times (7am-7pm to the website):
