First Timer Weather Question

Postby petho » Fri Jun 28, 2013 3:38 pm

Hi Folks,
I have a permit next month at May Lake and I see the special weather statement for lightening and thunder.
How do you all normally handle bad weather predictions?
Should I cancel the trip if there is a chance of bad weather?
How do you all handle thunder and lightening during a backpacking trip?

Thanks,
oscar

I don't spend a lot of time worrying about thunder and lightning in the Sierra until about one or two days before the trip. If the warnings are severe, I will give myself some options. Most of these kinds of storms strike in the afternoon, 2pm or later, and usually blow over/out by 6 pm or so. I try to get myself into camp before 2 pm, so that I can ride out the storm in my tent. We've had quite a few days of light rain in the Sierra over the past tens years of our trips, but using this plan, we've only had one really bad evening...and by nightfall that was over as well.

Thanks for the reply.
Do you make your camp with regard to lightning?
AS in placing your tent under or away from large trees?

NOT under the tallest tree in the area. Not in a cave. And not on top of a mountain !

I wouldn't get all that excited about thunder and lightening in July, it happens but it is mostly in the late afternoon and for a fairly short period of time, if at all. I have been going to May Lake for the last 25 years ad have never had any issues with the weather, and have been there from June to November. I would not even consider cancelling. In that area you will be camped at the High Sierra camp, as camping anywhere else around the lake is illegal.

I am getting ready for my trip this weekend to May Lake as this will be my first backpack in Yosemite.
Should I expect a Mosquito problem?
I am going to bring some Deet just in case but Im wondering if I need a mosquito netting hat?

Sorry for the noob questions but best be prepared...
