Where to hike in Sierra's that's not federal land?

Postby Recycling1991 » Wed Oct 09, 2013 8:53 pm

I was hoping to get up to Yosemite (ideally high country around 120) or the Sonora to Sonora pass area (around 108) before the snow shuts these roads. Looking for a good solid day hike. Are there any areas that are not federal land, so I can easily park and go hiking? All I can think of are either Yosemite NP, or the national forests or wilderness areas. Interested in sub-alpine lakes, granite, nice views, ... I don't really want to go to Tahoe. We do that drive enough times in the winter to go skiing.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

If it's not federal, it's private. We are going into the national forest - anything that is not gated is fair game. You have to be prepared to save yourself from whatever, but you should be taking chains or cables anyway.

We're also going to the coast - into national forest. And into state parks.

It's already snowing - be prepared. Tioga is already closed and I would not be surprised if 108 has also closed.

SR 108
[IN THE CENTRAL CALIFORNIA AREA & SIERRA NEVADA]
IS CLOSED FROM 26.4 MI EAST OF STRAWBERRY (TUOLUMNE CO) TO 11.7 MI WEST OF
THE JCT OF US 395 /SONORA PASS/ (TUOLUMNE,MONO CO) - FOR THE WINTER - MOTORISTS
ARE ADVISED TO USE AN ALTERNATE ROUTE

But there are nice places to hike before you get to this closure!
