Mt Gibbs: east ridge/Bloody Canyon Route

Postby flyzapper » Wed Feb 26, 2014 8:43 pm

I'm thinking about some climbs I would like to do this summer, and Mt. Gibbs is on the list. I could do a straight up route from the Mono Pass trail on the west or south ridges, but that seems a little boring. Has anybody done the east ridge starting at Walker Lake and going up Bloody Canyon? It looks interesting, and a little less steep at the top than the north ridge connecting from Dana. Is this the case? Any other experience or tips?

We hiked up Bloody Canyon this summer and camped at Lower Sardine Lake. From there, the climb seemed pretty straightforward. It's a long uphill to bove Lower Sardine Lake...and then I think you'd follow the small creek up there. The lower part of Gibbs above Bloody Canyon is darned steep. IN fact, the climb out of Lower Sardine is about as steep a trail as we've hiked...

you can see that area here on the left of the photo:

So you'd want to get above that first....the head up the peak.
