snow conditions on north rim of park

Postby lastcrusader » Mon Mar 17, 2014 8:56 am

I am planning on doing a multiday trip along the north rim of the park:

OBOFRT
Yosemite Falls
North rim/Snow Creek Falls area

timing is mid april - does anyone have a idea on snow pack conditions? I am not afraid of hiking thru some snow, but obviously would like to avoid a continuous 30+mile trek thru 3-5 feet of snow pack

Thanks

Right no there is little snow, which is a big problem.

Of course, a storm could change all of that.

Right now there is 2-4 feet of snow above the current snow line, which is essentially the valley rim. While exposed areas are melting out there's still snow in shaded and semi-shaded areas.

If there's a storm in the next three weeks that'll change. If there's not and temps remain the same, the pack will be thinner but still there.

Related question: when does snow pack on clouds rest trail typically get down to <1ft? Early June? Anyone been up there in the last week or two?

Typically doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is the year that you are going. Right now, this has been a very low snow year. But a storm can drop a foot of snow on Cloud's Rest just about any time in the next six to eight weeks. We've backpacked in Yosemite in mid-June and had significant snowfall at 5,000 feet.
