Minnesotan here. Have done plenty of hiking and camping in the past but have always wanted to do the big John Muir. It's like Mecca really.
Anyways, only feasible way for us to get to the JMT is via the Mono Meadow trailhead. We don't have a car so we are taking YARTS from Merced to the Yosemite Valley where we will pick up our wilderness permits around 10-11am. This is on the 27th of July.
The problem from here is in how we get up to Mono Meadow trailhead. There is a shuttle that takes hikers up the Glacier point, but it doesn't say if it makes any stops along the way.
Any advice here? I'd hate to rely on hitchhiking on the goodwill of others and then wind up stuck on the valley floor.
Thanks for any input!

That's not a shuttle, it's a tour bus. And yes, it's the only option unless you want to hitchhike or hike up the four mile trail before hoofing up the road to the mono meadows trailhead. You'll get tickets for the bus at Yosemite Lodge - you can reserve them by calling, and when you call, ask about whether they will stop at the trailhead to let you off so you don't have to walk up the road.

I've taken the tour bus one way to Glacier Point. It's a great way to start at the top.
See this webpage from the park concessionaire, YPC:
