Advice on Backpacking trip!

Postby heytherenaten » Fri Apr 04, 2014 2:46 pm

Hey Everyone,

I am planning on travelling to Yosemite Late August this coming summer. It is our first real backpacking experience. We have camped and hiked before, but never camped in the backcountry. I think this is a fairly good itinerary and leave time to rest and take in the views here and there. Please feel free to critique and offer changes and suggestions! Thanks :D

Monday: Arrive to Yosemite in the evening and stay at walk in camp 4

Tuesday: Hike 4 mile trail up near glacier point -- cut over to sentinel Dome -- double back to glacier point and then camp somewhere along Panorama trail

Wednesday: Hike from early Panorama Trail to Little Yosemite Valley. Set up camp. Hike up the trail along Merced river and head back to camp

Thursday: Early Half Dome hike --hike to Cloud's Rest -- Camp on other side of Cloud's Rest

Friday: Make way back to main village. Set up camp and relax in the area.

Saturday: First YARTS out

Your plan won't work, because you are not allowed to camp on the Panorma Trail. You will have to camp up Illilouette Creek two miles from the trail, or go all the way to Little Yosemite Valley.

If you have a wilderness permit you can stay in the backpacker's camp in North Pines the night before and the night after your trip. I'm not sure what you mean by "main village."

If this is your first ever backpacking trip, you may be in pain by the top of the Four Mile Trail, as first timers frequently have heavier than necessary backpacks. I recommend doing some local one night trips before traveling all the way to Yosemite for a three night backpacking trip.

I agree. And I also suggest that the same trip would be easier and more enjoyable if you started at Mono Meadows, took and easy day down into Illilouette Creek, where you can camp legally, and then hike on from there on day two.

And Clouds Rest to the Valley is one long day. Just head back to the Valley after Half Dome, and then hike CLouds Rest as a Day hike,...or hike out to Tuolumne Meadows and catch the shuttle to the Valley

Ahh ok thank you for your help! I have been looking over the internet and was trying to figure out where was a viable camp option. I will go back to the research and try to formulate a better itinerary. Thank you!

And by Main village I just meant the main valley with the visitor center and more amenities.
