trip mid-June

Postby kem.morehead » Wed Apr 16, 2014 3:10 pm

We are planning on taking a group of students from Lyell Canyon, over Vogelsang, and down through Little Yo to the Valley. We have our permits, but as a backup I got permits for the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne from White Wolf. We did the GCT a few years back in late June and I have assumed that it's usually a doable route in June. However, I'm now thinking I should check. Is the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne a good bet to be open the 3rd week in June?

Thanks for your help!

It'll be pretty darn hot. Not sure what else you're expecting, but once the pass opens in May, it'll be a do-able route then. Peak snowmelt is going to be second week of May, unless another storm dumps another foot or two of snow.

Yes, I remember it being very hot. Our first choice is the Lyell Canyon/Vogelsang/Little Yo option, but I wanted to be prepared with another option if snow made Vogelsang pass not possible (we're not prepared to use ice axes with these kids).

Thanks!

You may run into some soggy parts of the trail, and end up wading a bit in the GCT...but this year that is less likely than usual.
Check our our website: http://www.backpackthesierra.com/
Or just read a good mystery novel set in the Sierra; https://www.amazon.com/Danger-Falling-Rocks-Paul-Wagner/dp/0984884963
