Water in ponds on the way to Clouds Rest?

Postby aspenboy » Thu May 15, 2014 1:44 pm

Hi I'm thinking about a backpacking trip later this summer and was just wondering if anyone knows about the two little ponds on the clouds rest trail from Tenaya lake. Do they have water year round? And importantly, give that this is an extra dry year, will they have water later this summer?

The reason is that we'd like to camp reasonably close to clouds rest one night and these are the closest water sources to clouds rest, as far as I can tell.

Thanks, this is my first post.

You need to be farther out than that to legally camp. Besides, those become mosquito bogs. No fish to eat the larva.

Farther out than what? Those little ponds are between Sunrise HSC and LYV HSC....

But you are right about the bugs. And algae. And a great way to clog your filter for the rest of the trip!

thanks for the helpful info about the mosquitos and algae. Maybe we won't camp there then.

Just found this post from dan:

There are two water sources on the trail after Tenaya Lake trailhead and Cloud's Rest (the peak):

1) One is a campsite near two small ponds just to the north of the CR Trail. The water is sometimes stale and I wouldn't drink it.

2) After heading up Cloud's Rest part way is an intermittent stream with a campsite for 1 tent. The water is great and was fine in late July. By August it might be gone. So, it depends on how wet the year is, I guess. Sorry I can't give a definitive answer but this one is iffey.

Edit: See also this thread:

Seems a bit iffy to rely on either of these sources in late summer, especially this year (August). Guess we'll just have to schlep a bunch of water a few miles from sunrise lakes to the base of the clouds rest
