Tenaya Lakes -> Clouds Rest Sat. 24th

Postby Rboyd12 » Wed May 21, 2014 7:51 am

Hello All,

My girlfriend and I are scheduled to hike CRT via Sunrise/Tenaya Lake trail head down to Sunrise Creek this Saturday. It looks like some rough weather is still passing through, but should be cleared up and much warmer by Friday. I wanted to check and see if anyone is aware of current trail conditions to Clouds Rest. I've read accumulation should be light, but there still should be decent snow coverage. Will we be able to reach Clouds Rest without the use of crampons/snow gear? We will also be needing a ride to our trail head Saturday morning. I understand the shuttles don't start on Tioga Road until July, and hopefully the road will be re-opened. Any advise on transportation to Tenaya Lake? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Rboyd12

If by crampons you mean crampons and not microspikes or Yaktrax, I sincerely hope you know how to use them before you try (aka taken mountaineering coursework) because at best you can shred your clothes, at worst yourself, by using them.

There will be snow and there are no trail markers - the crossing of the outlet of Tenaya may be deep and WILL be cold, so hopefully you are not intending to wear jeans. You will need to be able to navigate without obvious trail if the snow is as deep as it was reported to be on 5/17 - 4 feet above 9000 feet elevation. I don't think "no snow gear" is a great idea.

Shuttles won't get you to that trailhead - all free shuttles are localized and do not go to other areas of the park. What you would need would be YARTS or the hiker bus - tickets and schedule for YARTS at yarts.com, tickets for the hiker bus at yosemitepark.com - neither of course will run if the pass is closed.

Snow is forecast through Thursday night. Though accumulations are minimal it will be cold at night and in the 60s during the day. Personally, I'm betting the pass will stay closed through Saturday.

Just wondering if you made the hike to Clouds Rest and if so can you let me know what the conditions were? Thanks. I am thinking about doing it June 1, but the conditions do not sound like they will be conducive.
