Postby gmalcolm12 » Thu May 22, 2014 3:43 pm

I need help planning a good 2 or 3 night trip any time between July 28th and August 6th. I don't have a clue on what would be make for a great trip besides looking at the locations that are already booked up. http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/u ... lheads.pdf

Ok, I booked entering from Tamarack and exiting Mirror Lake. Recommended campsites?

Ones that are legal. The rangers will explain that to you when you get the permit. Also, plan to have no campfires, since there are already bans being put in place.

It will also be hot. But the views are awesome.

Are campfires when backpacking completely banned now? On the site it says "Wood fires are allowed in existing fire rings only", which I wasn't sure what was meant by existing fire rings. Like are these simply ones which are at established campgrounds, or are there fire rings randomly throughout the wilderness?

California is in the middle of one of the worst droughts in its history. Most of the national forests are instituting bans, and the parks will follow along. If conditions are dry enough they sometimes even ban fires in the campgrounds. By the time of your trip, there will be a total ban on fires in the wilderness, just the same as last year. In some wilderness areas that includes stoves and even smoking cigarettes. You'll likely be instructed by the ranger and have the instructions written on your permit so it'll be very clear.

You'll want a stove that has a shutoff valve. No stick/twig/wood stoves, no alcohol stoves.
