Parking for White Wolf / Pate Valley Trailhead

Postby kevinT405 » Thu Jul 10, 2014 12:08 pm

I understand that we will need to park at the Lembert Dome parking area. Are there any safety concerns at the lot, aside from the usual bear preparation and no smellables left in the car?

There are hundreds of cars there every day. I haven't heard of any concerns.

So you realize Lembert Dome is miles from White Wolf, right?

Either way both lots are really busy.

I assume you are hiking WW to TM or TM to WW via Pate Valley. Personally I prefer to park at White Wolf, hike down to Pate and up to TM. Then you can catch the Tuolumne Hiker's bus (http://www.yosemitepark.com/tuolumne-meadows-tour.aspx) at the TM Store at 2:15 p.m. to head back to WW. If you start at TM and finish at WW, you'll need to climb ~3500 feet on the last day in the heat and the shuttle times are not convenient for getting back to your car. By traveling eastward, the climbing is spread over 2 days and you'll be facing the Tuolumne waterfalls along the way which I find more pleasant. Unfortunately, the many side falls along this route are dry or drying up already.

If the little parking lot near the WW store is full, someone usually leaves after a few minutes or ask an employee where you can park. Near Lembert, there is Glen Aulin TH parking along the dusty dirt/gravel road heading towards the stables.

Thanks Dave_Ayers. Good info. We are looking forward to the hike. Plan is to hike a loop with beginning and end at WW. Via pate valley and Glen Aulin.

That must be a long loop. or a real wicked cross country return... The GCT is usually a one way trip from end to end. The only junction is in Pate.

The loop from WW along the Tuolumne to Glen Aulin and heading back near Tuolumne Peak and Ten Lakes is a fine trail loop. I climbed Tuolumne Peak last week. The peak is well worth bagging if you have the time and energy to fit it in.

As I understand from reading the Yosemite NP site, it is required to pack out ALL waste. Human or otherwise. I have not backpacked in YNP before, so not exactly sure of the rules, but this seems to make sense. I just need to prepare for it.

Not sure what you are referring to here....

You are required to pack out all trash including used TP. human waste should be buried 6" down, 100 feet from water or trails. You will not have other kinds of waste - no pets allowed. pack animals poop wherever they go.
