camping between clouds rest and half dome

Postby cloudzrest » Wed Jan 20, 2010 1:02 am

Hi everyone!
I've heard there is some fire rings or campsites near the JMT / clouds rest trail intersection, I was hoping for some more specific information if anyone can help. Like where exactly to find the spots so I'll know where to look.

I'm trying to divide up a 4 day backpacking trip and I need somewhere between clouds rest and half dome to keep the distances reasonable. Thanks!
Patrick :P

Follow the Clouds Rest Trail (CRT) on a map southwest from Clouds Rest. At the first point it hits the John Muir Trail, that's the campsite. It also intersects Sunrise Creek, immediately to the south of the trail junction. The area is in a forest. There's fire rings. Last time I was there there was a bear cable, but I vaguely remember it being taken down. It's a major campsite. Most campgrounds are just to the east of the trail junction.

Don't camp too near the creek as there's lots of mosquitoes there.
If the mosquitos are heavy, consider camping to the WEST of the trail junction. You have to climb a few boulders, but you get a gentle breeze to blow the 'skeeters away.

Note that this is NOT the junction of the Half Dome Trail and John Muir Trail (JMT). That spot has no suitable campsites and it's in the brush. The junction you want is just to the east about a mile or half mile or so at the junction of the CRT and JMT.

Edit: It's a long slog from the CRT/JMT junction up to Clouds Rest. Start early and bring water. There's little or no water along the way. At least most of it is in the trees (not sun). Heading down from CR to CRT/JMT is easier (of course), although a little hard on the knees.
